Critical thinking has always mattered in higher education. But perhaps it matters even more when answers are everywhere, certainty comes cheap, and the world increasingly invites us to pick a side before we have had the chance to properly think.

So how do we create education that does not rush towards answers, but makes room for doubt, discomfort, curiosity and different ways of seeing?

At Fragments, we explore what the arts might have to offer. 

Sure, art can make education more entertaining and yes, a film, a play or a novel can perfectly illustrate what we already know. But the arts can also interrupt, complicate and unsettle. Art can slow us down when everything urges us to speed up. It can confront us with perspectives we would not have chosen for ourselves, keep questions open a little longer, and make the familiar strange again.

And perhaps that is precisely where their educational potential lies?

Fragments is a recurring symposium exploring how the arts can foster critical thinking in higher education, especially within universities of applied sciences. Organized by The Hague University of Applied Sciences, it brings together educators, artists and researchers. Together, we explore what happens when we give art real room in education.

In March 2027, Fragments returns for its third edition. And this time, we are doing things a little differently. Last time, we brought film, theatre and literature together for one day. This time, they each get a day of their own.

Three days. Three art forms. One question:
