In 1922, inventor and businessman Thomas Edison stated:

“I believe that the motion picture is destined to revolutionize our educational system and that in a few years it will supplant largely, if not entirely, the use of textbooks.”

Exactly 100 years later this revolution has not quite taken place. This is of course the case for more predicted revolutions, but also shows how strong the status quo of the textbook is.

But what if motion pictures or other video content takes the center stage in the classroom? What if you want to get serious about using film in your classroom – for example the currently much discussed film by Adam McKay Don’t Look Up? How would this affect your teaching?

I would like to invite you to the online workshop “How to Teach Don’t Look Up: critical thinking & film” on Friday afternoon January 28 from 14.00-16.00. In this workshop we explore using this film by selecting scenes, creating activities for our lessons and testing it on each other, to be ready for use in the classroom.

***Update**** Due to popular request I will organize another session on Friday afternoon February 4 – from 14.00-16.00. Only a few spots left…

In the past 5 years I have done applied research on how to teach critical thinking skills through film. This has resulted in a freely available e-learning course for lecturers (just published) How to teach critical thinking with film: an introduction

The workshop will truly be a blended event | to prepare yourself:

  1. Send an email to to tell me you are coming.
  2. Follow How to teach critical thinking with film: an introduction. | which you can do at your own pace at the time it suits you  | it takes approximately 2 hours
  3. Watch Don’t Look Up if not done so yet.

Due to it being online only 10 participants can join, so sign up soon!

Maybe the motion picture will revolutionize our educational system in 2022.
