Als we het economisch systeem willen veranderen kunnen we niet alleen kijken naar ‘klassieke’ economische actoren. Iedereen heeft een rol te spelen.

In het onderzoeksproject SUSTAIN (Sustainable Artistic Innovation) verkennen we manieren waarop kunst een bijdrage kan leveren aan de transformatie naar een volhoudbare economie. Dát kunst een bijdrage zou kunnen leveren aan die transformatie is geen gemeengoed. Er zijn dan ook steeds meer partijen die zich hard maken voor een stevige plek voor kunst in andere domeinen of ‘sferen’. Die organisaties zijn we in de loop van het SUSTAIN-onderzoek spacemakers gaan noemen.

Het zijn deze spacemakers die centraal staan in ons onderzoek: In4Art, Waag, V2_, Circus Andersom, Future of Work en Art Partner. Vertrekkend vanuit verschillende posities, werkend op verschillende manieren en mikkend op diverse vormen van impact proberen deze spacemakers scherp te krijgen hoe kunst ‘haar werk kan doen’ in de transformatie van het economische systeem.

Vragen genoeg. Want hoe maak en hoe houd je de ruimte voor de kunst in innovatieprojecten? Welke randvoorwaarden moet je daarvoor scheppen? Hoe voorkom je dat kunst als bron van vernieuwing naar de periferie wordt gedrukt – leuk en fris hoor, maar natuurlijk niet echt relevant voor economische vernieuwing die ertoe doet. Wat is de precieze plek waar kunst op haar effectiefst is? Wat is ervoor nodig om geïntrigeerde maar weifelende (‘wat gaat er dan precies gebeuren, wat levert het op?’) opdrachtgevers of beleidsmakers mee te nemen in het verhaal van kunst als motor van innovatie? Hoe maak je mensen in heel praktische zin ontvankelijk voor wat kunst kan doen? Hoe ga je om met eventuele spanningen tussen het zakelijke en het artistieke perspectief? Hoe laat je ‘de wereld’ de meerwaarde van kunst zien? Allemaal geen makkelijke vragen.

In het afgelopen jaar hebben Avans Hogeschool-onderzoekers Godelieve Spaas, Marga Rotteveel, Olga Mink en Kim Caarls en Jacco van Uden van De Haagse Hogeschool een conceptmodel ontwikkeld waarmee de verschillende spakemakerpraktijken in beeld kunnen worden. Een model waarmee ruimtemakers kunnen zien hoe ze nu te werk gaan en waarmee ze het gedachte-experiment voor nieuwe strategieën kunnen aangaan: ‘maar wat als we nu eens …’.

Op 9 maart 2023 hebben we de spacemakers, de leden van de SUSTAIN-klankboordgroep en andere betrokkenen uitgenodigd om gezamenlijk te reflecteren op het concept-model en om na te denken over het vervolg van het onderzoek: wat zijn de strategische vragen rond making way for art in other spheres?

In de komende periode gaan de onderzoekers het conceptmodel verder tweaken en maken we ons op voor de laatste fase van SUSTAIN.

If we want to change the economic system, we cannot afford to only take into consideration the “traditional” economic actors. Everyone has a role to play.

In the SUSTAIN (Sustainable Artistic Innovation) research project, we explore ways in which art can contribute to the transformation to a sustainable economy. The fact that art could contribute to this transformation is not common knowledge. An increasing number of organisations are therefore looking for ways to firmly position the arts as a source of innovation in other spheres, i.e., beyond the art scene. In the course of the SUSTAIN research we have come to call these parties spacemakers.

These spacemakers are central to our research: In4Art, Waag, V2_, Circus Andersom, Future of Work and Art Partner. Departing from different positions, working in different ways and aiming at different forms of impact, these spacemakers try to get a sharp focus on how art can ‘do its job’ in the transformation of the economic system.

So many questions. For how do you create and maintain space for art in innovation projects? What preconditions should you create for this? How do you prevent art as a source of innovation from being pushed to the periphery – nice and fresh, but of course not really relevant for economic innovation that matters. Where exactly is art at its most effective? What does it take to bring intrigued but hesitant (‘what exactly is going to happen, what will it deliver?’) clients or policy makers into the story of art as an engine of innovation? In a very practical sense, how do you make people receptive to what art can do? How do you deal with any tensions between the business and artistic perspectives? How do you show ‘the world’ the added value of art? All not easy questions.

Over the past year, Avans University of Applied Sciences researchers Godelieve Spaas, Marga Rotteveel, Olga Mink and Kim Caarls and Jacco van Uden (The Hague University of Applied Sciences) have developed a concept model with which the various spakemaking practices can be visualized. A model that allows spakemakers to see how they are working now and to enter into the thought experiment for new strategies: ‘but what if we …’.

On March 9, 2023, we invited the spacemakers, members of the SUSTAIN sounding board and other stakeholders to reflect together on the concept model and to think about the continuation of the research: what are the strategic questions around making way for art in other spheres?

In the coming period the researchers will further tweak the concept model and we will prepare for the final phase of SUSTAIN.
