Spacemaking: on how to create space for art and make system change happen.

Welke rol kan kunst spelen in het realiseren van systeemverandering? In het verbeelden en vormgeven van een volhoudbare economie? In het blootleggen van weeffouten en het vertellen van alternatieve verhalen? Kan kunst met experimenten voorgaan in een rechtvaardige en inclusieve samenleving? Weet ze technologische innovaties een nieuwe kant op te sturen?  

De verwachtingen van wat kunst kan betekenen in andere sferen dan de kunstwereld zelf zijn soms hooggespannen. Bijvoorbeeld wanneer we claimen dat kunst de motor van innovatie en reflectie kan zijn.

Maar de ervaring leert: kunst is geen panacee. Niet iedereen ziet of erkent de meerwaarde van kunst bij transitievraagstukken. En wanneer kunst wel aan tafel komt, weten we de ontregeling niet altijd werkzaam te maken.

In het SUSTAIN-onderzoek hebben we de afgelopen jaren gekeken naar de rol van Spacemakers: organisaties die ruimte maken voor kunst op plekken waar die ruimte niet vanzelfsprekend is.

Spacemakers zien de potentie van kunst maar weten ook dat de realisatie van dat potentieel werk vraagt. Hun werk.

In het kader van SUSTAIN hebben onderzoekers Jacco van Uden, Kim Caarls (De Haagse Hogeschool) Godelieve Spaas, Marga Rotteveel en Olga Mink (Avans Hogeschool) onderzocht hoe Spacemaking-praktijken door de verschillende organisaties worden vormgegeven:

• Waarom doen Spacemakers wat ze doen?
• Wat zien zij als de belofte van kunst buiten de kunsten?
• Hoe gaan zij concreet te werk in het maken van ruimte voor kunst?
• Hoe gaan Spacemakers om met de spanningen die ontstaan als kunst zich in niet-kunstzaken gaat mengen en andersom?
• Hoe gaan Spacemakers om met de ingewikkelde vraag naar meerwaarde of impact van kunst én van zichzelf als ruimtemakers?

Op donderdag 28 maart 2024 ronden we het SUSTAIN-onderzoek af met een openbaar slotsymposium. In een gevarieerd programma blikken we terug op het onderzoek, bespreken we de belangrijkste inzichten en kijken we vooruit: hoe maken we blijvend ruimte voor de kunsten en wie heeft daarin welke rol te spelen?

Spacemaking: on how to create space for art and make system change happen.

What role can art play in realizing systemic change? In envisioning and shaping a sustainable economy? In uncovering flaws and telling alternative stories? Can art lead with experiments towards a just and inclusive society? Can it redirect technological innovations in a new direction?

Expectations of what art can mean in realms other than the art world itself are sometimes high. When we claim for instance that art can serve an engine of innovation and reflection.

But experience teaches us: art is not a panacea. Not everyone sees or acknowledges the added value of art in transition issues. And when art does have a seat at the table, we don’t always know how to make the disruption work.

In the SUSTAIN research, we have looked at the role of Spacemakers over the past years: organizations that create space for art in places where such space is not self-evident.

Spacemakers see the potential of art but also know that realizing that potential requires work. Their work.

As part of SUSTAIN, researchers Jacco van Uden, Kim Caarls (The Hague University of Applied Sciences), Godelieve Spaas, Marga Rotteveel, and Olga Mink (Avans University of Applied Sciences) have investigated how Spacemaking practices are shaped by different organizations:

• Why do Spacemakers do what they do?
• What do they see as the promise of art beyond the arts?
• How do they actually create space for art?
• How do Spacemakers deal with the tensions that arise when art gets involved in non-art matters, and vice versa?
• How do Spacemakers handle the complex question of the added value or impact of art and of themselves as space creators?

On Thursday, March 28, 2024, we will conclude the SUSTAIN research with a public closing symposium. In a diverse program, we will look back on the research, discuss the key insights, and look ahead: how do we continue to create space for the arts, and who has what role to play in it?
